Novelty Medieval Globes, Part I: The Matryoshka Globe

While preparing an upcoming entry on a different (and much larger) medieval-map globe in my possession, I happened to stumble upon this little curio: a set of four painted wooded globes that nest inside of each other in matryoshka (Russian doll) style.  These have been tucked away in a drawer in my bedroom for at least 15 years but are in mint condition and actually still smelled of the lacquer they were glazed in when I pulled them out.  I have absolutely no idea how I got them, I’ve had them so long (it was a gift; that’s all I can remember).  As a small teaser for the examination of the other globe, I decided to make a mini-article out of this rediscovery.
